How do I apply for data access?
Note. only FinnGen Partner organization researchers are entitled for FinnGen account.
1. Fill in the FinnGen account request form to apply for a personal FinnGen account, which will give you access to the green data and (if requested and approved) to the red data. If you only want to access FinnGen Core results and PheWeb, you only need to apply for aggregated ("green") FinnGen data. The green library bucket can be accessed via the path gs://finngen-production-library-green.
If you want to access the personal level data, apply for personal (“red”) FinnGen data. Please note that getting red data access may take some time (several weeks to months). This is because you will be added to the FinnGen project as a researcher and as such need to be approved by the Finnish registry authority (Findata). Risto Kajanne (risto.kajanne@helsinki.fi) can assist you with any application-related questions.
2. After verification of your application (which may involve reaching out to the FinnGen contact person of your FinnGen partner organization to verify your identity), you will receive an account activation link directly from Google. Note that this email might go to your spam folder so be sure to check also that. Upon clicking the link, you will be prompted to create a new strong password for your account. You should also configure two-factor authentication immediately or risk getting locked out of your account soon after its creation. We will also send you a regular email as a notification of account creation (at this point you should have received the email also from Google, so be sure to check also the spam folder) and with all the details you need to setup the account.
3. If you have also applied for access to personal data in the Sandbox:
A) You will be sent a Sandbox user identification agreement, which have to be signed and returned, in order to be granted access to the Sandbox environment. The Sandbox user identification agreement is to be signed by an authorized representative of your company or academic institution.
B) After you returned the signed user identification agreement and you are approved by Findata as a member of the FinnGen reserach project you will be granted access to the Sandbox, which includes personal level FinnGen data.
C) When you login first time to the FinnGen Sandbox, you are promted to take the data security exam. Before answering the data security exam questions you are asked to get familiar with our security policies and how to safely work in the Sandbox by watching teh videos on our Data Protection & Security section in the Handbook featuring researcher Individual Jones.
If you are not sure how to fill certain fields of the application form or have trouble setting up your account, please contact Risto Kajanne (risto.kajanne@helsinki.fi).
