FinnGen Spin Offs

FinnGen spin offs are separate studies that fall outside of the scope of the Research Project FinnGen but are conducted by FinnGen Partners and have separate research permits and decisions of approval of the respective biobank(s) and Finnish national registries (if register data is used in the study).

These can, for example, include recall of the biobank study subjects (the study subjects that participated in FinnGen) for new samples, based on their genotype carrier status or a deeper investigation of hospital pathology and imaging data.

From time to time, FinBB or one of the FinnGen Partner biobanks can request a search of the FinnGen study subjects for possible Spin Offs. For launching such a search, FinBB (or the FinnGen Partner biobank) needs to fill in the Spin Off feasibility e-form:

Here's how the process works:

1. FINBB or any given FinnGen Partner biobank fills out the Spin Off feasibility e-form.

2. The form is directed to FinnGen's Data Protection Officer (DPO), admins, and data managers. The DPO checks if the request is okay and if there's enough information to proceed.

3. Once approved by the DPO, the FinnGen Partner Researcher tranfers the list(s) of potential FinnGen Spin Off participants to the finngen/red bucket in Sandbox and informs finngen-servicedesk@helsinki.fi of the names and location of the list(s).

Please note:

  • The list(s) should be named as follows: $spin-off-project-id_$biobank_name_$list_name.txt, eg. BB_2017-PP_TAMPERE_FG_IDS.txt

  • The list(s) should only contain FinnGen IDs (no registry data is allowed).

  • Separate list(s) should be generated per each biobank.

  • FinnGen’s embargo period should be taken into account and the list(s) should only include individuals whose genotype data is already available at the biobank(s)

4. The FinnGen data manager transfers the list(s) to the biobank(s)
