Description

Cancer records of cancer patients living in Finland are registered in the Finnish Cancer Registry. Data is available since 1953. Healthcare organizations have a statutory obligation to provide information on every cancer case or strong suspicion of cancer in Finland to the Finnish Cancer Registry. Cancer Registry information consists of summaries of cancer cases, which are assembled from the reports from different sources.

Variables

Detailed cancer data includes multiple variables that together give a full description of cancer cases. In addition to topography, morphology and behaviour codes that are presented in detailed longitudinal data, detailed cancer data adds information regarding cancer laterality, stage, method of diagnosis and follow-up status. More about variables and their levels are found here.

Data is validated before it is included in the registry. There is approximately a one-year delay between cancer being registered in the hospital and when it is entered in the registry.
