Create Concept Sets using standard code descendants

Standard codes are grouped into hierarchies. More specific standard codes in the hierarchy are called descendants.

In Atlas, standard codes are grouped into hierarchies. You can define a Concept Set using the descendants of standard codes. If you are using non-standard codes, you must first find equivalent standard codes, because non-standard codes are not grouped into hierarchies and do not have descendants.

When you define a Concept Set, you can include standard code descendants if you wish to include all more specific standard codes in the hierarchy.

In the example below, we have defined a Concept Set named asthma_standard[MN] using standard codes for Asthma and Allergic asthma.

  • Only two concepts are currently selected (see the number 2 in the Included Concepts tab)

Include standard code descendants

  • To include the descendants of standard codes, click the Descendants check box on the right. In this example, we have included the descendants for both standard codes.

You can include descendants separately for each standard code, or you can select descendants for all standard codes by clicking the Descendants check box on the header line.

  • After selecting the descendants for both standard codes, we have now selected 116 concepts (see the number 116 in the Included Concepts tab):

In the Included Concepts page, you can see the:

  • record count: (RC): number of individuals with the standard code in the Concept Set

  • descendant record counts (DRC): number of individuals, including descendants, with the standard code in the Concept Set
