How to send an Application to the Scientific Committee

New study plans need to be approved by the FinnGen Scientific Committee beforehand by submitting a proposal that can be submitted online using the guidelines in this page.

The 3 Tiers of Potential FinnGen Analyses

Based on the FinnGen publication policy, the proposals can be in 3 tiers

  • Tier 1 includes analysis involving data and work of FinnGen's core teams,

  • Tier 2 includes secondary analyses e.g., an in-depth analysis of one disease or trait, and

  • Tier 3 includes analysis where FinnGen results are used in a peripheral way e.g., replication studies or variant lookups.

In practice, all proposals are Tier 2 or Tier 3 -level. According to the publication policy, Tier 3 level proposals are sent to the Scientific Committee for information only as their approval is not required.

Submitting and getting your proposal approved

Proposals are sent to the Scientific Committee members in an online evaluation form one week before the next Scientific Committee meeting. All Scientific Committee members evaluating the proposal can choose to approve or not approve the proposal, leave comments, and/or request that the proposal be discussed at the next Scientific Committee meeting.

All Tier 2 - proposal researchers are asked to present a short 5-minute project presentation at the Scientific Committee meeting, and if the all Scientific Committee members have approved the project on the online form, then that project is considered approved and researchers can proceed to run analyses using FinnGen data.

All analysis proposals are archived in the FinnGen Sharepoint.
