What is the FinnGen Sandbox?

The FinnGen Sandbox is a secure computational environment to access individual-level "red" data. You need a personal FinnGen account to login into the Sandbox. You will also have to pass an online data security examination.

Each organisation within FinnGen has their own separate Sandbox. When you login into your Sandbox, you will be asked to choose an interactive virtual machine (IVM). The IVM is a virtual computer that you can access from a web browser. You can use FinnGen data and analysis tools in your IVM.

Once you have completed your analyses in the IVM you can export aggregate-level "green" data from the Sandbox.

You are not permitted to export individual-level "red" data from the Sandbox. For example, you are not allowed to take screenshots or write down individual-level data such as FinnGen IDs.

How do I get access to the Sandbox?

The online data security exam will be automatically presented to you when you log in to the Sandbox for the first time or when the exam has expired.

Detailed information about the sandbox is available in the following section:

How do I export data from the Sandbox?

Aggregate-level "green" data can be exported from Sandbox by using the download request functionality within Sandbox. You are responsible for making sure that no individual-level "red" data is included in the download request. A general rule is that data is considered individual-level if derived from less than 5 individuals.

DO NOT take any screenshots of your Sandbox environment or write down individual-level "red" data as this will be considered a severe breach of conduct.
